"My neighbours are very noisy/causing trouble, what can I do?"
Of course, you should first approach your neighbours directly, as they may not realise that they are causing any disturbance. A polite note or knock on the door will normally remind students that they need to be more considerate.
Environmental Health initially deals with complaints about noisy neighbours.
The environmental health page on the council’s website will advise you what action you should take in this scenario. If the problem persists, the Public Safety Unit (PSU) may be able to help. The Unit's main aims are to record, co-ordinate and find solutions to issues of anti social behaviour, community safety issues and the fear of crime in the Canterbury district. Anti Social Behaviour Reports can be made to the Unit's Hotline number 01227 289 260.
The categories that the PSU deal with are: Neighbour disputes - intimidation / harassment, rowdy nuisance behaviour in the street, vehicle related nuisance (although parking issues maybe be referred elsewhere depending on the nature), Environmental Crime e.g. graffiti, Drugs/substance misuse, which mainly centres on Crack House Closures.
If another department or agency can more successfully deal with the incident reported, the PSU will refer the caller to the relevant number.

"The students’ garden next door is very overgrown…"
Everybody has differing opinions over how a garden should look. The council has no power to deal with gardens unless there is an environmental hazard - please contact
Environmental Protection
if you are unsure.
If vegetation is overhanging onto the public highway or road, you should report this to Kent Highways. If the property is a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO), the garden must be kept in a safe and tidy condition. If this is not the case, you should contact Private Sector Housing on 01227 862 204 or use the feedback section on this site to let us know.
Accredited landlords have agreed to keep their gardens tidy, especially during the summer months when the students have moved out. Please try and be accommodating – we will contact accredited landlords and remind them of their responsibilities if their gardens look like this, but not if they're in this condition.
If you think that an accredited landlord near you is neglecting their responsibilities, you should leave a comment in the feedback section for us to chase up.

"The students next door have left their rubbish out/their bins are overflowing/their rubbish hasn’t been collected and they have all left Canterbury"
If you are concerned about rubbish on a neighbours property, you should call the council’s contact centre on 01227 862 000. If the rubbish is on a public highway, you should contact Serco on 0800 031 9091.
The council is limited in the action it can take but if the house is accredited or a HMO, Private Sector Housing may be able to help also. For more information on refuse and recycling, visit the council’s website.

"The exterior of the student house next door is very poorly maintained and messy"
Accredited landlords have a responsibility for keeping the exterior of their houses relatively tidy. If you are concerned about a house in your neighbourhood, please let us know using the feedback section of the site so we can contact the landlord.
